You Are Not Alone

By Carmel Gamble
Breast Care Nurse at St Vincents Northside
If I could to tell you just one thing about breast cancer, it would be that it is not just one disease. It has so many variants and different components that your breast cancer will be different from everyone else. It nearly always comes out of the blue and suddenly you are amongst legions of other women who are fighting, have fought and mostly survived this disease.

It may feel like you are on a roller coaster physically and emotionally. I suggest you get your best team to help you. Family, friends and your treatment team.

My role in the treatment team is to support my patient and her/his family through the various treatments and stages of breast cancer.

Education about the disease and its treatments is important, giving them the confidence and power they need to manage the challenges that arise during this phase of their lives.

You will receive way too much advice, some of it will be well meaning but not always. Only listen to what you feel is right for YOU. Take one step, one day at a time. Be kind to yourself.
Remember you are not alone and there are people out there to support you.
All the best.
